The sun sank in the sky,as we stood by the river,Hand in hand.We listened to the melting ice song,full of chimes and tinkles as it made its way over the rushing water.
And felt like singing along.

the five dollar robin.

The spring when I was around 7,my Sunday school teacher  at the time proposed a contest.I imagine it followed some sort of creation lesson,perhaps one to do with birds.What I do remember is,whoever saw the first Robin would win five dollars.And so it came to be that I would diligently go out to the apple tree's in the front yard and watch for the elusive red breasted creature.Everyday I wanted more and more to see Mr. Robin,but alas,the bird didn't seem to share the wish to see the scrawny red braided girl.Finally the glorious day arrived.I remember very vividly the flash of red and black,the soft ground sinking under my rubber boots,the smell of damp earth.The way the sun looked as it shone down on my prize robin hopping around beneath the trees.I immediately ran inside to telephone my teacher.Five dollars was mine! Oh the riches of two tooneys,a looney and a few quarters bring (nearly a fortune in the eyes of a seven year old).I cannot tell you what I did with the money,nor what happened to that serendipitous bird.The years have passed and I have grown older,my legs are not so scrawny,my teeth fit nicely in my mouth,And five dollars has sadly ceased to be a fortune.But I still get that little excited thrill when the snow begins ro melt away,and I'm transported back to that time beneath apple blossoms.One day Mike and I will have littles of our own,and together,we'll take them adventuring through the woods and perhaps I'll tell them the story of my very first robin.And maybe,just maybe,We'll try to find one for ourselves.

Gahh.

How does one even find the words to describe the best day of life thus far?

Magical.

He had meticulously planned every detail,driving my overactive curiosity into a fine frenzy as I simply could not figure out where and when he would "pop the question" as they say.A few weeks ago I proposed a ski adventure,and he graciously allowed me to believe that it was my idea.So friday dawned,the idea crossed my mind that maybe..just maybe today was THE day,but quickly discarded it as it was after all the day I "planned".

So together we collected the snacks,our game of choice and set out.The sun shone down on the fresh snow,just as it had on that day two years before when he asked me out. And just like that day our ski's plowed through the drifts,our laughs and songs rang through the trees and excitement was in the air.We reached the cabin and a fire was built,tea was brewed and poured,the snacks were pulled out and scrabble was waiting.He pulled a folded note out of his pocket and read me the most beautiful poem he had written for me.My mind and heart were racing,and due to that,only halfway through did I actually realize it was a poem.The poem ended and he quickly grabbed something from his pack, knelt infront of me and asked me the single most wonderful question in the world.

and I said

OF COURSE!!

The tea? never finished. And that scrabble game? well it'll have to wait.

But that day,something more then a ring was given to me.It was a promise.A promise that I'll get to spend the rest of my days with my best friend.And thats the best part of all.

Gahhh.
